The importance of propolis against COVID 19
In the May edition of 2021 of the magazine Message Sweet of the São Paulo Association of European honeybee breeders beekeepers (APACAME) an article was published about propolis as an important ally against COVID 19.
According to the article, propolis has antiviral properties, can block the virus's interaction with cell receptors, improves immune response against infections, reduces the excessive inflammatory response that compromises the lungs and other organs, helps alleviate symptoms of comorbidities associated with high mortality in patients with the disease, in addition to being a safe product, cheap and widely available on the market.
The authors also discuss a limitation in the use of propolis as an adjuvant drug: the variability of its composition. Because it is a product made by bees, it is almost impossible to control its final composition because it depends on the plants., the climate and other conditions of the place where the propolis was produced.
The text, by Andresa Aparecida Berretta, Marcelo Augusto Duarte Silveira MD, Jose Manuel Condor Capcha and David De Jong show some of the evidence that propolis can help to treat and prevent the disease.
At the end of the article, the authors suggest other recent publications on propolis and COVID 19 worth checking out!
